One of four heart sons of H.H. the Gyalwa Karmapa, one of the most important of the Kagyü lineages, playing a significant role in maintaining the continuity of the teachings. The first incarnation of the Situ line was Chokyi Gyaltsen and the current incarnation is the twelfth. The Tai Situpas are regarded as emanations of Maitreya, the future Buddha, who currently resides in the Tushita-heaven and is said to incarnate himself on earth on the appropriate time.

The Situ line, before being so named,
is said to have first manifested as:

  • Lotsawa Marpa of Lodrak,
the disciple of Naropa, and master of Milarepa, (Marpa is regarded as both an emanation of Maitreya, and of Hevajra) then as:
  • Drogön Rechen (1088-1158),
one of the heart sons of Düsum Khyenpa, the first Gyalwa Karmapa, followed by:
  • Naljor Yeshe Wangpo (1220-1281), and then as:
  • Rigowa Ratnabhadra (1281-1343).
